Auxiliary verbs

If you are speaking about something you have already done, is it all right not to use the auxiliary verbs had, has, and have.

For example,

I had decided to go with Jennifer to the party.

Or

I decided to go with Jennifer to the party.

Are both sentences correct?

Both are correct - it depends on the context :
I decided to go to the party.
I had decided to go to the party with Jennifer (after all), but then I found out she had asked someone else! I shouldn't have hummed and hawed so much in the first place.
