    registering

Could anyone please explain what the following in bold are saying in the given context?

    1. Self-control is the ability to remain composed in spite of our emotional state. This does not mean forcing a smile when we are sad or angry. It does mean registering sad and angry feelings as well as controlling our reaction to those feelings.

    2. My own common emotional breakdowns include e-mail letter bombs, criticizing sarcasm, and inappropriate humor. I have become aware enough to eliminate many of these responses from my repertoire and I have the grace and peace of mind to not go down on myself if I have a relapse.

    Thank you.

    Re: registering

register in this context: realise and acknowledge the feelings ... be aware of them.

go down on myself: As far as I understand it, you don't do something that you consider to be below your dignity.

I'm very interested in the teachers' explanations, because I only know this idiom "go down on..." with a sexual meaning. Either you can use it figuratively as well or I'm totally on the wrong track.

    Re: registering

I think your interpretation is correct - it is the sexual term used figuratively.

In this sentence it means: not to be self critical, mad at oneself, disappointed in oneself.

She was always getting down on herself about her weight.

"go down on someone" is a sexual act.
