    bar, brandtailing

    Dear teachers,

I have problem in understanding the following two sentences:

    1. Brandtailing----Advertising at the speed of smart.
Does this mean "Brandtailing is producing advertisement in the smartest way compared with other advertisement companies"?

    2. The bar is set with the client's business objectives.

I can't decide the meaning of the word "bar". So I don't understand the sentence. Could you please explain it to me?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Re: bar, brandtailing

"Brandtailing" seems to be the registered name of an advertising agency, so this must be their slogan >> "use our services and your products will be promoted with the speed of lightning".

"the bar" = metaphorically the counter (like a shop counter) on which the products are presented

I think the bar here is the think you have to jump over to be successful, like in the high jump competition.

We've set the bar high, we set the bar too low, etc.

This may well be a matter of missing context. As the sentence with "bar" used "with", I interpreted it as I did. So perhaps if Jiang could give more context, we can tell what is the right meaning.

    Re: bar, brandtailing

    Dear Anglika,

    The following is the context.

There are five essential skill sets in advertising. The first is accountability. The bar is set with the client's business objectives. Then we raise it a few notches higher. Our philosophy is that image-building and branding must always be balanced against the need to deliver on the bottom line. Advertising is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you, Jiang - context is all! Barb was right in her interpretation.

    Dear Anglika,

Thank you very much for your explanation. And "the bottom line" in the sentence means "the basic rule". Is that right?

    Re: bar, brandtailing

"the bottom line" usually means the final result. It derives from the bottom line of a financial statement - the final summary of the financial position.

This text is using it to say "good results".
