    Made of vs made from

Is there a difference between "made of" and "made from"? I can find lots of examples of both in google. However, when looking at the answer to the following fill-in-the-gap exercise : "don't buy those shoes - they are made ... plastic", the only answer given is "of". Thank you.

"made from" indicates a process of making shoes and makes shoes something more than the sum of its ingredients

"made of" tells us about the material (that shoes are just plastic)

In practice, "made of" and "made from" are used interchangeably as the difference is slight.

    [
made of:to indicate the material used to make it eg This cricket bat is made of willow.

made from : indicates that the item has been put together from several components
eg The table was made from four pieces of oak.
The table is made of oak

Re: Made of vs made from

Where the material or substance changes during themanufacturing process, we often use 'from'; wine is made from grapes (we start with a fruit and end up with an alcoholic drink).
