    has to be good

    a. He has to be good to beat you.
    b. He must be good to beat you.

In these sentences, can we tell whether he has beaten you in the past, or he is beating you regularly or he will beat you in the future (ie. If he beats you in your upcoming match, then he is good.)

    Re: has to be good

They indicate either an ongoing situation or a possible future one. The context would indicate which.

    Re: has to be good

    Thanks Anglika.
    c. He had to be good to beat you.

This could mean: He beat you and therefore one can say that he was good.
or: If someone was to beat you, that person had to be good.
Future in the past situation. For instance: we wanted him to beat you, but we had to train him. He had to be good to beat you.
or: We were looking for someone to beat you, but we had to find someone good.

    Is this correct?
