    go to college/the college

    Hi,

Is it necessary to use the definite article in the phrase:

In the morning after breakfast he goes to (the) college to give English lessons to students.

    Thank you! :)

...out of context it's even wrong to use "the college"...

Yup, it's specific, M, so you need 'the'.

"goes to college/ school/ university/ practice" carries a more general meaning like "attends college".

not, if you are not referring to a specific college, but only to the general idea of such places and what they are used for (likewise:go to school, prison)

It's quite difficult to say from this one sentence. Could you let us have a bit more text?

Unfortunately, I don't have the context :) The phrase was taken from an exercise!

and the point of this exercise is to make you understand when to use the article and when to leave it ?

maybe you could have a look at this which seems to be Russian as well
there they ask for the definite article to be used in a similar sentence as the college is defined as one particular college

    No (further) context is needed.
You definitely need "the" because the sentence refers to the college where he gives English lessons.
