    What means word 'thing' in the context:

    'Oh, darling, you can't go around with that tatty green canvas thing.'

    'thing' is used when the person is unsure of the actual name of the object.
    As well, someone may well know what an object is called eg a hat, but might say, 'that tatty green thing' because they regard it as not worthy enough to be given a name, called a hat - almost as if it would be an insult to other hats to call it one. (lol)
