    two questions

    Dear experts,

    1. What does 'approach' mean here:

'My mother rang up at 8:30 in the morning last August Bank Holiday and forced me to promise to go. She approached it via a cunningly circuitous route.'

    2. What does it mean 'to be survived by somebody'?

'Johnston is survived by two sons.'

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello PinkGreat

    1) It means that the mother reached the subject by circuitous verbal routes. In other words, she managed to make her point, and extract her promise, by speaking unclearly or deceptively on the matter at hand.

    2) To be "survived" by someone is that a person lives after another dies. When my mother dies, she will be survived by me. When your parent dies, that parent will be survived by you and by the other members of your family.

    Hope this helps!

    Re: two questions

'approach' : she didn't bluntly go straight to the point. She steered the conversation gently, so that it crept up on you, and before you know it, you've reached a point in the conversation where you find yourself making a promise.
