    Exclamation what does apostrophe mean?

    I was wonfering if you could help me out and tell me what does apostrophe means?

    I'm not sure what you mean. An apostrophe is a punctuation mark ('). It is used to

    • show possession - David's bicycle ( the bicycle belongs to David)
    • show a relationship - Sarah's brother
    • replace missing letters in contractions - he's (he is), isn't (is not)
    • indicate missing letters when dialect or accent is put into writing - 'em (them), 'im (him), 'er (her), etc.

    An apostrophe is the punctuation mark that shows when a letter or a number has been omitted, or is used before or after s to show possession:

    It's not fair [It is not fair]

    That is John's book [That book belongs to John].
    The cats' eyes gleamed in the light.

    As to its meaning in itself, it comes from the Greek: "apo" [from] + strephein [to turn] = turn away.
