    Do rather better

Please help me understand what does the underlined part mean?
"I[as a marxist ] am not proposing that we have some alternative to postmodernism , just that we can do rather better."

    Re: Do rather better

    Hi

The fixed-expression we can do (rather) better is another way of saying there are other choices available to us.

    Hi

I read it as post-modernism never was nor ever will be considered.

    Re: Do rather better

Postmodernism tends to refer to a cultural, intellectual, or artistic state lacking a clear central hierarchy or organizing principle. Marxism is just about the opposite of this, that is in effect, a clear alternative.

However, the speaker is very carefully saying, no, I don't think we are diametrically opposed, black and white, you can only have one or the other. He is saying both might work, BUT OUR WAY WOULD WORK BETTER!
