tense in the adverbial clause of time

    Hi, everyone.

I have a question of the tense in the adverbial clause of time introduced by since or when:
When the verb in the main clause is the past perfect, what tense should be used in the dependent clause? Here is an example:
John had worked hard since he came (or had come?) to the factory.

    Thanks.

    Thank you very much.
However, I am still uncertain about this subject: how to determine the tense of time-clause introduced by since when the main clause is in past perfect tense?
Here are two examples from Practical English Usage (Swan, second edition):
They had been close friends since Alice was small.
(Can I say, they had been close friends since Alice had been small?)
They hadn't seen much of each other since Polly (had) moved away.
(Moved and had moved are both right? Why?)
    Thanks in advance
