    only dignity left lay in...

    Hello,

    Pls explain this sentence for me:

    A time arrived when the only dignity left lay in not lying to oneself.

    One still have dignity if one doesn't not lie to oneself???

    Without more context, it's hard to know exactly what has happened, but people have presumably lost a lot of their dignity, probably by having to be dishonest in public, but they can keep some of their dignity by being honest to themselves.
