present to be given to someone

    Hi,

Jan (my good friend since childhood) has given me some grammar books, because she doesn't need them anymore.
And I am going to write this down in my diary.

    1. The grammar books are given to me by Jan.
    2. Jan gives me some grammar books.

Could you tell me if the sentences are the same in meaning please?

Re: present to be given to someone

    Hi kwfine

Jan (my good friend since childhood) has given me some grammar books because she doesn't need them anymore.
And I am going to write this down in my diary.

1a. The grammar books are given to me by Jan.
1b. The grammar books were given to me by Jan.

2a. Jan gives me some grammar books.
2b. Jan gave me some grammar books.

Sentences 1b and 2b express the same meaning with a slight difference. In 1b, the books are in focus. In 2b, Jan is in focus. Which meaning do you want to express, 1b that getting the books is more important or 2b that Jan giving you something is more important?

    Thanks Soup!

    How about these two sentences?
Are they the same in meaning?

    A.
Jan: These grammar books are given to you.

    B.
Jan: These grammar books are for you.
