The English goldsmiths / English goldsmiths

    Hi,

I read the following sentence in a book. I don’t understand the purpose of ‘the’ before ‘English goldsmiths’. Would the sentence mean different if I removed ‘the’?

The English goldsmiths discovered and fell prey to this temptation in a very short time.

    Thanks,

    MG.

The authors refers to some particular or specific group of English goldsmiths. If s/he wouldn`t use the definite article, the following noun [ i.e. goldsmiths ] referred to goldsmiths in general.
