    Re:Sex Pistols

The Prime Minister was taunted across the Chamber by a rampant Leader of the Opposition, following a successful rebellion by Labour MPs who complained that it was wrong to raise taxes for the least well-off in society.

Our political correspondent says this is a major blow to the authority of the Prime Minister, who is still living in the shadow of his charismatic predecessor.

Later in this bulletin, we look at the impact of soaring food and fuel prices. On the industrial front, a wave of strikes is brewing. And in showbiz, the Sex Pistols have just been sacked by their record label...

Sex pistols aside, that could have been yesterday. In fact, the year was 1977, it was the height of punk and there was even a mass rally in Birmingham, complete with band playing that old NUM favourite: "I'd rather be a picket than a scab."
    Hi,

I searched the info. of " Sex Pistols" via Google. I learned it was a punk band. I'd like to learn what is the meaning of below sentence.

the Sex Pistols have just been sacked by their record label

What is the purpose of the author? Thank you!

    Re: Re:Sex Pistols

They lost the contract with the record label.

'sack' (informal) = to dismiss somebody from a job.

Snowcake, thanks for your attention. I understood sack means dismiss. But What is the " record label"? And why does the author mention about Sex Pistols here?

They did a bit more than lose it - but I suppose you know that. They violated the terms of their contract (probably something to do with behaviour/language/ 'bringing the company into disrepute'/failure to do something required of them - I forget the details) so that the record label had a reason to sack them.

    Re: Re:Sex Pistols

I searched from the Internet. They had a song named God Save Queen but it is not the national anthem of the U.K.

Yes. We were talking about Sex Pistols ... so it is absolutely clear.

    Thank for your comment.

    Re: Re:Sex Pistols

They were sacked by two labels. EMI sacked them after they were drunk and swore on TV, then A&M sacked them because of the song 'God Save the Queen', which they ended up not releasing. They got substantial payments from both labels, so they were trying hard to get sacked from Virgin, but even when they smashed office furniture up, Branson refused to sack them. If I remember right, they were supposed to have thrown a photocopier out of a window.
