    Red face Direction adjectives

I understand that it is proper english to use western Pennsylvania with the w in small letter. I also understand the it is correct to use Northern California with the N in capital letters. Is this correct and, if so, why?

    Thank you

    Re: Direction adjectives

NorCal, or Northern California is considered a region, whereas western Pennsylvania is not. Northern California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rule: do not capitalize directions that are not part of a region's name.

    Re: Direction adjectives

If it's part of the name or a widely accepted division, we use a capital letter.
