    Tense

    Which is correct:
    None of the students is going to the concert.
    None of the students are going to the concert.

    Althogh the first is correct...the second SOUNDS more correct

    The first one is standard, the second one is informal. Both are correct.

    I know what you mean:

    "None of those lads is good enough for my daughter"
    'feels' right
    but, as you say,
    "None of the students are going to the concert."
    also 'feels' right

    It might seem that 'none' is some latter-day contraction of 'not one' and therefore held that 'none' can take only a singular verb, never a plural verb. As it happens, 'none' is descended from an actual word, Old English nān, meaning ‘not one,’ and has been used for around a thousand years with both a singular and a plural verb, depending on the context and the emphasis needed.
    So...one of those few situations where, if it feels good, feels right, then it's no crime to do it your way!
