    I had been in

Please, could you tell me which of following sentences are correct?

"I had been in Ireland for four months last year."

"I was in Ireland for four months last year"

"I had been in Ireland for four months last year, then I went back to Italy"

I have doubts about the preposition (in or to?) and the verb tense (had been/was).

    Thank you

    Michele
