    using past tense

    Will you please tell me the difference between following two sentences?

    1. "He did tell me."
    2. "He told me."

    Does both sentences have same meaning and are just two variants of same thing.
    Please put some light on correct usage of both the forms.

    Thanks

    With 'did' there has to be something in the previous context that implies he didn't tell you something. For example:

    A. He didn't tell you he was getting married.
    B. He did tell me.

    or

    He didn't tell me he was getting married but he did tell me he had given his girlfriend an engagement ring.
