    PRO's or PROS?

    hi guys,

    should I write "Pro's" and "Con's" or "PROS and CONS"...

    and when I read it.... the "s" of Pro should be voiceless, whereas the "s" of Con should be voiced (because it's preceded by a voiced consonant)? Right?!

    Thanks

    PAT

    Hi trapanipalermo,

    The apostophe s, "'s" denotes;

    1. possession, as in "John's bike"
    2. the contraction of "it is", "she is", "he is" etc. "it's John's bike, he's happy."
    3. the contraction of "it has", "he has", "she has" etc. "it's been raining".

    In plural constructions no apostrophe is used, so in answer to your question, PROS and CONS is correct. The "s" is pronounced in both cases.

    I think in India we pronounce it PROZ and CONS,if you listen carefully it is PR.O..Z AND CONS'. Where proz is pronounced with longer duration but 'and cons' is pronounced in a single go. I hope You would master it with time.

    Re: PRO's or PROS?

    yeah...it's a question of practice...

    I must admit that in man cases I have to think twice before pronouncing the "s".. :)

    I mean ..after all, it's no big deal..but in some cases it's important (conferences as the one I'm preparing for and so on)
