    Re: play or do sports?

for individual sports you should use
    play
with football, tennis, rugby, baseball, golf, table tennis, squash, volleyball, basketball, cricket, hockey, badminton and ice hockey. (Rule: they all involve a ball of some kind.)
    go
together with sailing, skiing, rowing, swimming, and fishing. (Rule: go + -ing.)
    and
    do
for athletics, aerobics, gymnastics, and boxing. (Rule: do + exercise/do + -ics.)
Note: boxing is an exception, as are wrestling, weight lifting.

    hope this helps

So, we say, "What sports do you do?" and "I do boxing."? or "I play golf." or "I go horseriding."?

    "What sports do you do?"
"I do boxing (on the weekends)." <colloquially> But more so "I box."
    "I play golf."
    "I go horseback riding."

    Re: play or do sports?

"I go bowling ever weekend." or "I bowl every weekend."

    How about archery?

    Thanks.

We don't generally use 'play' with sports that are done individually, do we, Soup?

    play swimming/skiing/bodyboarding/surfing/bowling/kitesurfing/etc

'play' is used with sports where there is a "face to face" competition.

Golf seems to be an exception.

I could do some boxing, but I don't think I could do boxing, at least I haven't herd of it. This is my first post ever on this site. The rest of this thread makes sense.

I was in this discussion with a Chinese student 2 nights ago. I found that i have little knowledge of Equestrian sports....anyone care to comment on that one? And chess, archery, shooting..... I play chess...Ok forget that one. I arch...haha I don't think so. I shoot, I am a shooter. They are shooting. I don't know the shooting terminology.

I think "to play shooting" would be strictly a US term.
