Is PM's Wife First Lady in UK?

    Hello!

Is British Prime Minister's wife called First Lady? Or is it a title for a female royal member only? Thanks!

    See here

BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | Sarah Brown: The new 'first lady'

It's a common term applied to the wife of a head of state.

Once Hillary Clinton was the first lady, when her husband was president of the USA.

Re: Is PM's Wife First Lady in UK?

The prime minister is not the head of state. So British Primeminister's wife is not the first lady.
The head of state is The queen or king.

You're welcome, thedaffodils. And thanks for the beer. A good idea in this sunny weather.

p.s.: It's correct, in the UK the Queen is the head of the state, and Brown is the head of the government. It does not mean that you can't call her (Sarah Brown) First Lady though.

Re: Is PM's Wife First Lady in UK?

    Just some additional information:

"In some monarchies this title is used in reference to the spouse of a Prime Minister as it is understood that the "First Lady" of the country is the Queen regnant or queen consort."

Brought to you by wikipedia, article "First Lady".

Snowcake, thanks for your supplement. Well, German beer is well-known in the world. Though I hardly drink, I heard about it too.

Re: Is PM's Wife First Lady in UK?

I suspect there is no equivalent to First Lady. Germany's chancellor is a woman, and I've never heard about her husband being called First Gentleman.

Except it is said or written with tongue-in-cheek.
