    Good morning.

Would it be better to say 'last night' referring to the night just gone (yesterday)?

I'd say 'last night' but 'yesterday evening'. I wouldn't say the alternatives were wrong though. Here are comparative BNC hits:

    WORD 1 (W1): NIGHT (72.6%)
    WORD W1 W2 PERC-1 SCORE
    1 YESTERDAY 73 114 0.39 0.54
    WORD 2 (W2): EVENING (27.4%)
    WORD W2 W1 PERC-2 SCORE
    1 YESTERDAY 114 73 0.61 2.22

    WORD 1 (W1): NIGHT (72.6%)
    WORD W1 W2 PERC-1 SCORE
    1 LAST 8870 168 0.98 1.35
    WORD 2 (W2): EVENING (27.4%)
    WORD W2 W1 PERC-2 SCORE
    1 LAST 168 8870 0.02 0.07

So in the BNC "Yesterday evening" is more than four times more common than "yesterday night", and the strength of the collocation between "last" and "night" rather than "last/evening" is more than four times stronger than that.
