    How to use "also"?

    Dear teachers,
I have confusion with placement of "also".I request you to help me with some examples.
    1) IF I say "I am also studying economics."what is the meaning of this sentence? In addition to someone else? or in addition to some other subjects (Maths,History etc)?

2)If i say "I can also speak French" Is it I too or French too?

    Please help me.

    In addition to other subjects.

"I can speak English and also French".

If you wanted to say that you (as well as someone else) speak French, you would generally say " I too speak French".

    Please help me.

hsb, the sentences are grammatically correct and pose the ambiguity to English speakers as well. We hope that the sentences are uttered within company that understands the intended meaning.

To substitute the word 'also' with 'too' would help with the meaning of 'in addition to someone else'.

Question Re: How to use "also"?

Thanks for the explanations! I still have some doubts about the matter:

    1. Do I always have to use "also" before the verb?
Example.: I speak English and I also speak French

    2. Is it correct to put the word after the verb?
Example.: I speak English and I speak also French

    3. Is there any other use for the word "also" (position in the sentence)?

    4. If I intend to substitute "also" for "too" may I only put "too" in the end of the sentence?
Example: I speak French and I speak French too

    5. Is there any difference of mening between the sentences above with "also" and "too"?

P.S. If there's any incorrect use of English in my post (even if it's collocation) please correct me!!!

    1. Do I always have to use "also" before the verb?

No, but 'also' in this case emphasizes your skill.

    2. Is it correct to put the word after the verb?
Example.: I speak English and I speak also French

    No.

    3. Is there any other use for the word "also" (position in the sentence)?

Please explain. There are many uses for the word and I think you're getting to use it very well.

    4. If I intend to substitute "also" for "too" may I only put "too" in the end of the sentence?
Example: I speak French and I speak French too

Yes. 'Too' in this instance is correctly placed at the end of the sentence. However, if you were to make the point that you spoke French as well as your freinds, you could say: 'I too speak French' This would be the distinguishing feature you were talking about in your earlier post.

    5. Is there any difference of mening between the sentences above with "also" and "too"?

    Not in my opinion.
