    Pizza = pi [as in pit] - tza

    Pisa = pee -ssa

    The /i/ sound is long in both words. The difference is a noticeable /t/ in pizza. Think of the pizza as belonging to a guy named Pete:

    Pete's 'za

    The word Pisa is Italian, but when anglicized sounds like something nasty Pete might do to his pizza if he drank too many beers:

    Pee 'za

    Hope this helps.

    Hi there,
    It seems that American will pronounce 'pizza' with a long 'i' sound whereas British will say it with a short 'i' sound. Am I right?

    Thanks
    pete
