    to the extent

"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government. And to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility."

    hi,
please what does this expression mean?
I have found many sentences on the web and bnc, and the meaning seems to difer from one to the other.
    thanks.

    hi,
    thanks a lot.
could I use "since" instead of "to the extent" and preserve the idea of the sentence?
    it would be:
"And since that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility." instead of "And to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility.".
    thanks again.

    Re: to the extent

Replacing 'to the extent' with 'since' would change the meaning. You could however try something along the lines of 'with/in regard to'.
