Re: Which one is correct ??

    Hi Anglika,
I have some queries about the answers. Please clarify for me. Thank you in advance :):

    2) scared
    3) afraid
    4) terrified
=> why is the answer "terrified" and not "frightened" or "scared"? what's the difference among the three adjectives?
5- All the following are word pairs except one :
    1) cat / cart
    2) sat / seat
    3) chess / chesse
    4) pen / pan
=> what are word pairs and why is the answer "pen/pan"?
8- "A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel for by
    1) Thomas Chester
    2) Gilbert Chesterten
    3) Charles Dickens
    4) James Child
=> do you mean both "for" and "by" are correct? or only "by" is correct?
15- One of the following is not a type of literature :
    1) drama
    2) poetry
    3) fiction
    4) prose
=> why is it "prose" and not "drama"?

    Many thanks

Re: Which one is correct ??

    1. terrified / panic-stricken

    2. chess, cheese is actually the correct choice.
Note that chesse is a typo and should be cheese. The <ss> of chess is pronounced [s], whereas <s> of cheese is pronounced [z]. The word pair (or minimal pair) cat/cart differ in vowel, sat/seat differ in vowel, pen/pan differ in vowel, and chess/cheese differ in vowel and final consonant.
    3. ... is a novel [that was written] by...

    4. Prose includes essays. Drama includes plays, e.g., Shakespeare wrote plays.

    5. Skim is to read the gist, whereas skan is to look for specific information, e.g., an address, a price.

Re: Which one is correct ??

    hi Anglhka,
word pairs means minimal pairs ,isn't it?
minimal pairs mean words have the same sound except for one phoneme in the same place.
so, all [cat-cart] \sat -seat]\pan-pen]are have the same sound except one phoneme in the same place ,but [chess-cheese]has two different phonemes.
what do you think about this?

    thanks a lot

=> so what exactly is "word pair"? could you please give some more examples?
    3. ... is a novel [that was written] by...
=> and so "for" is completely wrong?
    4. Prose includes essays. Drama includes plays, e.g., Shakespeare wrote plays.
=> I know but the original question didn't ask what Shakespeare wrote. It was "One of the following is not a type of literature", and I think drama is not a type of literature, is it?
    Many thanks

Re: Which one is correct ??

    1. frightened of animals, people, living things.
    2. See here Minimal pair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    3. 'for' is a typo. It should be 'by'. For means the book was written for someone.
    4. Drama is a type of Literature, as is prose; i.e., fiction, non-fiction, but not essays. The writer uses the word 'prose' to mean essays.
