    automatic pilot?

    Hello Everyone,

    The following sentence is taken from a news from 1980s. Could you tell me what the underlined means here?

    ...We often have said in the past that we are not on sort of automatic pilot in the case of any of these questions. And finally we are in the process of consulting with the British and our allies on what other steps may now be appropriate.
