I know that I can say: I was riding by train or I came here by train.

Can I also say: I was riding on a train or Riding on a train I was reading a newspaper.

It is actually incorrect to say " I was riding by train" - but correct to say " I was riding on the train"; your suggested sentences using this are both fine.
