    Help with metaphor!!

    Hold fast to dreams,
    For if dreams die,
Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.

    Hold fast to dreams,
    For when dreams go,
life is a barren field frozen with snow.

What is the meaning of the first metaphor?
What is the meaning of the second metaphor?

    Thank you

Both metaphors indicate lifelessness or hopelessness. In the first, a broken-winged bird will easily fall prey to a cat or to any larger predator. The bird, lacking its ability to escape, is as good as dead. The human spirit flies when it gives rein to its dreams.

In the second, not only is the field barren (incapable of growing anything) but it is also covered with snow and little or nothing grows in the winter. This might indicate an absence of inspiration or creativity.
