The following line is from a newspaper. Could someone help me to understand the meaning of the last part of this sentence. I am not sure what it means by "they make let alone purchase products from North America"
However, the truth is the products are going to the low-wage areas of the world where workers cannot even afford the products they make let alone purchase products from North America.
Thanks for the quick replay.
"Let alone" refers to?
who purchase products from north america?
It means that the workers cannot afford the goods they manufacture, much less/or even buy imported goods.
"let alone" is a conjunction with the meanings of "Or even"; "much less"; "to say nothing of".
He could not care for his wife, let alone [or even] his children
They cannot afford to buy new clothes, let alone [or even/much less] new shoes.
