    neutral walls & other questions

    Dear Teachers,

I read these from True Pleasures by Lucinda Holdforth:

    1. Those neutral walls seemed indifferent to the eager tourist.

What does "neutral" mean in this context?

    2. I learnt a lot of things from my education, but I didn't learn the first thing about the history and culture of Paris.

Does "the first thing" here mean "the most important thing"?

    3. Within the bland creamy walls of a Parisian mansion, the courtyard was strewn with blossoms.

    What does "bland" mean here?

    4. ... it was an occasion with a multi-ethnic cast of photographers, fashion designers, tarot readers... and beautiful young things.

Does "beautiful young things" refer to models?

What does "neutral" mean in this context? The walls carry no meaning.

    2. I learnt a lot of things from my education, but I didn't learn the first thing about the history and culture of Paris.

Does "the first thing" here mean "the most important thing"? "I didn't learn the first thing" = "I didn't learn anything"

    3. Within the bland creamy walls of a Parisian mansion, the courtyard was strewn with blossoms.

What does "bland" mean here? lacking character. "Cream" is a tone of colour that is neither white nor yellow, but bland.

    4. ... it was an occasion with a multi-ethnic cast of photographers, fashion designers, tarot readers... and beautiful young things.

Does "beautiful young things" refer to models? It might. It could also be any young and beautiful people attending whatever event is being described. More context is needed.
