    too big a

    Can one say:
1-I was trying to solve too big a problem.
2-I was in too big a mess.
3-I was talking to too beautiful a woman.

#3 sounds lexically odd. Replace 'beautiful.'

If you use a structure like this, you are saying that because something/someone is so big/beautiful etc something else is impossible:

It's too big a problem (for me to solve)
The room was in too big a mess (to be tidied in such a short space of time)
She is too beautiful a woman (to remain single for long)

    Yes. That's what I meant.

I was trying to chat up too beautiful a woman.
(She was too beautiful for me. I was way out of my league.)

I was trying to solve too big a problem.
I couldn't do it on my own. I needed help.

Yes that's ok then but you'd have to finish the sentence for the structure to be acceptable I think:

I was trying to chat up too beautiful a woman for me to hook/succeed in attracting.

I was trying to solve too big a problem for me to handle on my own.
