    eldest / oldest

    Hi!

John is the eldest / oldest of the three brothers.

Is eldest the right answer? I am so confused today that I can barely think.

Thank you very much in advance.

Can I use eldest or should it be used only as an attribute?

So far as I am concerned, they are synonymous and either can be used.

    Hi Anglika!

    Thank you very much.

If you were to choose between eldest and oldest - in an ESL examination- which one would you choose?

    Thank you again.

Teia, that is a very nice question!

    Probably "oldest".

Thank you very much Anglika! The only rule I know refers to the fact that elder and eldest are used attributively.

    Thank you again!
