    Infinitive

    Dear teachers,

    There are three sentences:

    1. Itís dangerous to bathe in the river.
    2. This river is dangerous to bathe in.
    3. This is a dangerous river to bathe in.

Would you be kind enough tell me whether they all sound truly and clear in English?

Thank you in advance for your efforts.

    Regards.

    V.

    Re: Infinitive

    Hello Vil,

Yes, they all sound fine. I would read them as follows:

    1. A neutral statement: the focus is on the danger.

    2. The sentence tells you something about the river (i.e. the focus here is on the river as a source of danger).

    3. As #2, but perhaps with a more emotive sense of danger ("dangerous" directly qualifies "river").

    Best wishes,

    MrP

    You're welcome!

I should have added that other members may have different interpretations Ė it may well differ from ear to ear.
