    past perfect

    Hi

I'd like to ask you about such a koan, i.e., a problem that Zen masters often give students to focus on while meditating.

What was my face before my parents were born.

Of course I'm not asking you to try and interpret it (though you may try ), but I'm rather wondering if the past perfect tense should be used somewhere in this sentence, for example: What had been my face...

It doesn't need to be used.
