    past tense, perfect aspect

If I'm not mistaken this sentence is a clear example of past perfect?

Saturday was the first time that he had competed in the 100 against world-class competition outside Jamaica, even if a majority of fans were on his side.

    not a teacher

'had completed' is in the past perfect tense which is used when you refer to the 'past within the past'.

eg. He had previously won several competitions when he competed in the event.

However, where the time is specified i.e. on Saturday,I think the past tense should be used.

Saturday was the first time that he competed in the 100 against world-class competition outside Jamaica, even if a majority of fans were on his side.
