    to release atmosphere

Is there another expression describing loosening the pressure (eg.at work) or nervosity except for "breaking the ice"? I was wondering about "releasing atmospere" but im not quite sure if thats ok.

I thought of an example: The situation was tense. I made a joke to release the atmosphere a bit.

    Can you suggest anything else?

    thanks
