Common word is better because it means it was a general thing and popular means it is a wellknown or famous thing.
I'm not a native speaker of English, so please take it as my personal opinion.
I also think "common" is the best choice in this case.
However, "popular" might be possible, though I've never seen or heard
"it's popular for sb to-."
"it's popular to-." sounds OK to me.
I went to the link you provided to us. Indeed, I've found lots of examples including "popular for-," but I haven't been able to find "popular for sb."
It's either "popular for sth" or "popular for duration of time."
