    Secretary

Can anyone please advise me - I would like to know whether to use HAS or HAVE in the following sentence

The Family has/have since moved into temporary accommodation....

One family which must comprise of at least two people so not sure. It would be They have or She has but not sure whether Family constitutes a pleural or singular.

    Thanks.

    Re: Secretary

Hi, as a Brit and mentor, but not a teacher, which word would you use in the following case?

"The Families has/have since moved into temporary accommodation...."

This should give you guidance as to which word to use in the case of the family i.e:

"The Families have .... " vs
    "The Family has ...."

    Hope this helps

Family is a collective noun which can be understood as either a unified body or a collection of individuals. Depending upon that the verb will agree in the singular or plural respectively. In your sentence the agreement is in the singular: The family has moved... (as one unit they have changed their location)
