    Smile made white soup enough

Hi. Please help me with this sentence.

...and as soon as Nicholls has made white soup enough I shall send round my cards. --- excerpt from <pride and prejudice>

What does 'made white soup enough' mean? Does it mean everything is prepared?

    Thank you very much.

    Re: made white soup enough

Cindy, I'm not sure, to tell you the truth, but if I had to guess, I'd say it means one of two things:

    1. make enough soup for everyone
    2. practiced the recipe enough times <Modern English>

tedtmc, the link you provided explains what White Soup is. Cindy is looking for an explanation of the word "enough".

    I just read the chapter.
As soon as the cook has made enough soup (to feed the many people who will attend) he will send out the invitations to his ball.

    Re: made white soup enough

...make white soup enough for everyone.

...make white soup enough to go all round.

It's a style of writing from that literary period, but still crops up occasionally.

eg You've got clothes enough and to spare (meaning = more than enough clothes )

I think it is weird though - to send out invitations (cards) for the ball after the cooking is done.

    Re: made white soup enough

It does indeed. (And I had forgotten how much I disliked Miss Bingley.)

Thank you for all your help. At the beginning I regarded it as an idiom.

    And I dislike Miss Bingley,either.
