This is not a standard sentence. Can you give more information about where you heard it and what was happening at the time?

    Re: a sentence

    Hi Barb_D.

I wrote to a man (a native English speaker, 61 y/o, a taxi driver) in ICQ:

    Me: Hi
    He: Is you?
Me: I am a learner of English. I am looking for someone to talk.
He: Are you male or female?
    Me: male
He: Only talk to ladies sorry bye
    Me: Ok. Bye.

Do you think he wanted to ask my gender by that question, or if so does besides that meaning it has another?

    Re: a sentence

I honestly have NO IDEA what he meant by "Is you."

    I see "ASL" a lot - age, sex, location. I see "h r u" a lot - "how are you"

This is completely new to me. And a mystery.

Profy, it appears that he is looking for females to date. Which is why he asked your gender.

The "Is you?", I agree, is odd and somewhat incomprehensible. It could be a typo, Is it you?, meaning Are you a person I know?
