    "the"?

    Dear teacher:
    I was confused about the use of " the" when I read "...like the Baltic Sea" on the newspaper. Baltic Sea is obvious enough for readers to know which sea we are talking about. Is it necessary to use "the" before "Baltic Sea"

    Yes, it is. Some use of articles is traditional. It's not logically motivated. The names of seas, rivers, channels, etc. take 'the'.
