    PET Sim :: What's wrong

I took the test ( PET Writing (Part 1) - Online Language Quiz - UsingEnglish.com ) and I can't understand why my answer (Q7) is wrong.

Q7 - Somebody took a lot of pictures at the party
(*) A lot of pictures were taken by somebody at the party
( ) A lot of pictures were taken at the party

It is the only question I failed. Can you explain me why?

I don't know. It could be either one.

    Sim, My little friend,

I don't think we have in English:

    Taken by somebody

We just use instead of that:

    Taken by someone

So it's clear that the second choice is correct!

That is English. What it says is that a lot of pictures were taken at the party. We don't know who took them, but they were taken by somebody at the party.

    a) A lot of pictures were taken by somebody at the party
The meaning is identical, only the word order is different.

    b) A lot of pictures were taken at the party
The meaning is more or less the same, but is not exactly the same sentence, in the way the first one is.

I mean, it is not necessarily wrong, but there's a perfect match.

But I am not a teacher.

I would say that it's rather unuseful to use taken by somebody instead of taken by someone! (Or perhaps impossible!)

I was talking about the second portion of the sentence!

It is not unuseful or unusual. It's common.

    It's a transformation exercise:
Q7 - Somebody took a lot of pictures at the party

() A lot of pictures were taken by somebody at the party.
