What's the context, the sentence or dialogue you found it in? I was gone has two meanings. It could mean not there in body or mind.

The original sentence----"I gave his Mom and Dad my real name and phone number (another automatic dismissal for a Ronald McDonald, but I figured that I was gone and had nothing to lose)"
Here, I guess, it means "I would leave my job"
Does "I was gone" have any other meanings? may be, such as pass away?
There is a song named "when I was gone", I don't know the meaning either.

Thanks. It sounds as if he is saying that he knows he won't be around for long. The context just isn't enough, though, to determine what he meant. More context would help.
