Going to vs present continuous for future reference

    Hi there,

Sometimes I have probelms in deciding wether I should use present continuous or going to, e.g:

What are you wearing / going to wear at the party tonight?
This is my last day here. I'm going to go / I'm going to England tomorrow
I'm not using / going to use this car this evening, so you can have it

In the case one of the options is not right, could you please explain why?

    Thanks

Everything you have written is correct. The important thing to remember is that present continuous form can only have future meaning if you use a future time expression.

I'm eating dinner. (with no future time expression=right now)
I'm eating dinner at her place this evening. (future time expression: this evening)

By the way, you say in case, not in the case.

Though 'to be going' and present continuous for a future action are very close, there is a tendency to use 'to be going' to emphasise intentions and present continuous to lay the stress on arrangements.

Style editors usually consider 'going to go / come' as stylistically odd combinations.
