"Once upon a time, two girls contracted tuberculosis from their nanny, an immigrant whose illness was not identified until her charges were diagnosed."

please, what's the meaning of the bold word in this sentence?

    thanks.

    Re: charges

"charges" here means "those who are/were in her charge [care]"
