    To write in red

Hi! We Chinese are told that it is offensive to write in red unless we want to emphasize some parts of them. In China, usually only teachers are allowed to write their comments in red on students' papers. Is it same for Westerners?

I found some forumite's essay was written in red. Do Westerners think it is proper?

I'd say that this is simply a matter of cultural differences, tD. I have never heard of that for North America.

    Re: To write in red

Red it hard on the eyes, and does carry that sense of a teacher's corrections, but there's no real prohibition on doing it.

As a side note, in the navy, the commanding officer was the only one who would use red, and the executive officer (2nd in command) used green. If you saw anything with either red or green, you immediately knew that it was from someone pretty important.

In my job, I use red pen all the time - but they are to make edits and corrections.

    Hi river & Barb_D,

    Thank you for your answers.

Barb_D, glad to learn the tidbit about navy's writing mannerism.
