    paraphrasing of six sentences

    Dear teachers,

There are six original sentences as well as their modifications as a result of paraphrasing of some words and words combinations from the corresponding former one.

1.1. It was difficult to keep detached with such things going on around.
1.2. It was difficult to remain indifferent with such things going on around.

2.1. He viewed his work with detachment.
2.2. He viewed his work impartially.

3.1. His early years were spent in poverty and obscurity.
3.2. In his youth he was poor and unknown.

4.1. They were treated with leniency.
    4.2. They were treated mildly.

5.1. I can’t understand why they exalt him to the skies.
5.2. I can’t understand why they think highly of him.

6.1. She was on edge all day because of the coming exam.
6.2. She was nervous all day because of the coming exam.

Would you be kind enough to verify their English sounding?

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards.

    V.

That looks like good work to me, except that I think if you exalt someone you praise them publically, not just hold them in high regard.

    Hi Barb_D,

Thank you for your just evaluation of my work.

Concerning the weak meaning of the expression “ think highly of him” namely “have a good opinion of, regard very favorably” a would propose a few better one: “express warm approval of”, “acclaim”, “applaud”, “extol”, “glorify”, “magnify”. Thank you for your precise verification.

    Regards.

    Re: paraphrasing of six sentences

Vil, be careful with a thesaurus. More than once at work, we've collapsed in giggles over some of the suggested synonyms, imagining how our business documents would read if we just chose some of them randomly.

Some of them come full of meanings (connotations) beyond the dictionary defintion.

Words like "glorify" "exalt" and "magnify" seem more appropriate for church than the workplace. I like to use www.m-w.com because there are often usage notes that talk about subtle differences between synonyms.

This link isn't realted to this post, but shows an example of how they deal with synonyms when there may be confusion: continual - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

He's thought very highly of at work - he is esteemed by his colleagues - he is very welll spoken of. I personally use the phrase "I think very highly of him" or "I have a very high opinion of him" if I want to say something like that.
