    The word expulsion

Can someone please clarify the meaning of the word expulsion in the following context.

"Your physical shell expired after a hundred years and then you rested, evolving until they called you up for the next phase in the cycle. Or you could choose not to rest, and instead keep the same physical shell and become Enmortal ólike some of the Elders, but you had to be awarded a special dispensation for that. Most Blue Bloods went through the cycle. What did they call it? The three stages of vampire life: Expression, Evolution, Expulsion."

-Blue Bloods, Melissa de la Cruz
    ...

This explanation comes from a source close to the author:

    "Expulsion
Their mission was to evolve to a point where God could forgive them and take them back into Heaven."
    ...

Being a non-native English speaker, I thought the word expulsion meant ...

"the act of forcing out someone or something; the act of expelling or projecting or ejecting, etcetera ..."

... but if they really want 'to be forgiven and get back into heaven', I don't understand how 'expulsion' could be the appropriate word for the concept.

    Comments, please ...

    Re: The word expulsion

Possibly, the act of driving a force out of the vampire. Force being the thing that makes a vampire a vampire.
